Melina Uncapher PhD

CEO and Director of Research
Melina Uncapher, PhD

Dr Uncapher is a Stanford- and University of California-trained neuroscientist with over a decade of experience in conducting field-leading neuroimaging research on how humans learn and remember, and how they pay attention to the world. She applies this research to outreach work in education, technology, and law. Since 2010, she has been conducting applied neuroscience research at Stanford, funded by the MacArthur Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. As a MacArthur Scholar, her work helps lawmakers shape evidence-based practices for memory-related issues in the criminal justice system, such as whether neuroimaging technology can determine whether an eyewitness is accurately or falsely recognizing a witness, or whether it can detect concealed memories. Her NIH-funded work investigates how multitasking with digital media and technology may affect the brain. Her new UCSF lab conducts research on how executive functioning (e.g., attention, cognitive control, and working memory) contributes to academic achievement. She regularly teaches Science of Learning courses to teachers and leaders throughout the country, and advises on evidence-based education innovations in policy and practice.
